Note From Our Board of Directors

May 5, 2019

There are many issues related to Tyler’s Meals on Wheels that need to be addressed.

1) Finances – Meals on Wheels East Texas is on sound financial footing. Our audited financials, which are in the black and in the best shape in years, may be viewed here on the website.

2) Clients – Unfortunately, it isn’t as simple as just calling the local Meals on Wheels office and meals will start being delivered. With the federal and state funding mechanisms, which are relied on to operate, there are required processes and procedures which take time. Our local team is doing their part as fast as they can. Currently, there are approximately 60 clients who are awaiting approval for meals. That is 60 too many; but by comparison, it is far fewer than many other Meals on Wheels programs in Texas, whose clients awaiting a confirmation number are as high as in the hundreds. Please note that each person must be assessed and approved for their eligibility, which is not an act of the local Meals on Wheels but rather this approval comes from the state level.

3) Board – Our board, like many non-profit volunteer boards, changes over time for many different reasons, such as board members terms end or the member may resign as they have moved, or for personal health reasons, or even their job responsibilities have changed and/or they no longer have the time for a demanding board position. So, new board members join. We currently have a 14-member board. Eventually, we would like to expand the board to 20.

4) Leadership – As board chairman, I am focused on strategically leading Meals on Wheels East Texas forward and I am excited to be working with our strong board and the truly amazing staff, who are the heart of our mission.

5) Future – We have made great strides in the last year and as we move forward I invite you to join the team that wants to change the future for those who are hungry; not only to deliver hot meals to those whom we serve but also for the success of the overall mission of the Meals on Wheels ministry.

If you would like to share your time, treasure, and talent in this worthwhile mission by serving on the board, please click on this link to reach me or any other member of our board.
